Last month I was working with the folks over at Blurb at the PPE show in New York. My mother who is a fine art photographer based on the east coast was there to visit me. We were randomly chatting with this nice guy named Todd Wemmer who turned out to be quite interesting. He has an excellent website called photosdie and conducts audio interviews about photography. If you’re a photography lover, keep him on your radar.

We’re flattered he picked us. My mom and I have had the joy of sharing our love for photography for a long time so it’s nice to hear it articulated in these interviews. Here they are:

We decided to bother one of my very best friends, her fiance, and their bad dog Otis for the weekend.

We hung out at the beach near Santa Barbara, bought some crabs off a fisherman’s boat at the harbour, then headed up to the Santa Ynez Valley to spend a night on the Jonata vineyard (where Matt is the vintner). We made a really delicious crab dinner and naturally tasted some awesome wine.

It was a wonderful weekend and exactly what we needed heading into the busy holiday season.

Tara and Matt were recently engaged so we took a few pseudo-engagement photos by some haystacks on the vineyard (I’m going to do a real session in the spring), if Tara lets me. She is one of my absolute best friends in the world but she’s mean to photographers. It’s too bad because Tara and Matt are so fun to photograph. They are so playful and silly (see below).

Also, our respective dogs Luna and Otis had so much fun playing (except for the bath part), that they are both exhausted today.

This is an image of a young, African America boy near Cincinnati, taken in 1942 or 1943. It’s by one of the FSA photographers, John Vachon.

I love the shallow depth of field which pulls this little guy right out of his setting. He looks a little vulnerable but seems to be by himself so that suggests a certain courage. I hope this man is still alive today and was able to cast a vote on Tuesday.

There are lots of new babies in our life right now so I’m always on the look-out (although this product in particular is for kids 3 and up). It’s a color wheel puzzle made by pottery barn kids. It features colors such as ochre, vermillion, and violet and it’s made entirely out of wood.

Get this for your kid and you’re sure to have a graphic designer on your hands!

She and I collaborated on this shoot and she hired a great crew. We woke up super early and photographed in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco.

I got to shoot on film for much of the shoot (see all of the square images below). Some of you have experienced this during family photo sessions. I love shooting on film. You can now add a roll to your family session for $30/ea for color and $40/ea. for black + white.

I’m shooting a bit, working the blurb.com booth at the PhotoPlus expo, and eating lots of great food. Thanks to all the awesome photographers I met today. It was really great to see you in person, especially Amy-Beth and Susan (both photogs in New York)!

I thought I’d post two images that I believe were made in New York in 1953. The Chamber of Commerce handed out free pumpkins and both of these kids are guarding them until their moms picked them up. I love these images. It had to be a proud day for both of these kids. The little guy on the top kept one pumpkin for himself and apparently sold the rest - surely that guy went on to do well in business.

Found at a local antique store. I am pretty certain this is the same child. I found several prints that were the same quality. They looked professional and I almost wonder if this was an early stock photo or portrait session.
