announcing St. Louis area photo sessions this November!

10.16.08 | Permalink | Comment?

I am very happy to announce upcoming photo sessions in the St.Louis/Southern Illinois area. I had a fabulous time photographing Kate & Audrey and look forward to meeting more cute kids!

I’m offering two sessions. My very popular fine art session and a special mini-session geared toward busy parents who just need a few images for holiday cards. Email me to get on the schedule. Check our more details below.

Most importantly, anyone who books sessions during this trip is guaranteed to get prints, canvases, coffee-table books, and if you’re fast, holiday cards! I can’t believe the holidays are sneaking up so fast!

O’Fallon/St. Louis available photo session dates:
11/24
11/25
11/26
11/28
11/29
11/30

Fine Art Session: $285
This is the most popular session I offer. It’s 1.5 hours of a family session up to four people; kids, mom and dad, extended family, etc ($25 extra for each additional subject). The cost is $285 and includes the following:
- a 7×7 hardbound proof book of all the images
- images fully retouched and in an online gallery within 7 days of your session
- slideshow set to music
- option to purchase prints, digital negatives, holiday cards, and coffee-table books (in time for Christmas!)

Mini holiday card session: $179
This is a new session for me this fall. It is a session dedicated solely to getting images for holiday cards. This is a half hour session at a location in your area and it includes the following:
- images fully retouched and in an online gallery within 7 days of your session
- 3 fully retouched digital negatives for use on holiday cards or for prints
- option to purchase more digital negatives or prints

Email me to get on the schedule.

photographing a wedding today…

10.15.08 | Permalink | Comment?

I’m headed off to city hall in a few moments to photograph another wedding. I love it there because there is so much love in the air. It’s making me all sentimental for the love in my life so I thought I’d post this photo of Joe and Luna. He was a little down or a little sleepy I can’t remember but he’s so cute and so is Luna.

Here’s to getting married on a Wednesday!

another sighting…

I had another “kid in costume in grocery store” sighting the other day and was so bummed I didn’t have my real camera. Forgive the iphone camera quality! I was nonetheless so excited to see this well before Halloween. Do you remember the lightsaber kid from a few weeks ago? This little superman actually scared me a little bit; all you could see where his little eyes and little hands. Not sure it was actually a kid!

Hopefully, there will be a ton more before Halloween! If you capture one on your cell phone or another camera, email me and I’ll post it!

Have a great Monday!

vintage photo Fridays, lost Titanic children

10.10.08 | Permalink | Comment?

Today is the very first vintage photo Friday! I hope you’ll stop by every Friday for the next image.

This week’s image:

Louis & Lola, orphans of the Titanic waiting to be reunited with their mother, 1912.
5×7 glass negative

This week’s image comes from the Library of Congress’s vast national archive. It’s two children who were separated from their parents when the Titanic sank. In this image they have yet to be reunited with their mother. Their father did not survive. The photo is amazing on a number of levels; from imagining the anguish their mother must have felt not knowing where they were to their clothing and general contentedness. Finally, it’s particularly haunting to see the smaller child holding a boat as though it’s sinking.

How this idea started:

A few weeks ago Joe and I were walking around the Mission district here in SF. We stopped by one of our favorite antique stores called The Apartment. I love old photos and they had recently reorganized all of their images so it was easier to browse by subjects. I got sucked in right away and spent the next 20 minutes perusing. I looked outside to find Joe sitting on the curb across the street - what a sport! Nonetheless, I found so many great images that I thought it would be nice to share them. Naturally, it also interests me to see how children have been photographed through the years.

The images range from early photos of kids standing stick straight and a little blurry due to the long exposures, to candid photos from the 1960s and beyond. In addition to images I find out in the world, I’m going to post images from the Library of Congress and elsewhere. If you have an image to share, please email me at info(at)sarahwert(dot)com. I would love to share your image!

sweet sisters…

My last shoot during my whirlwind trip to Chicago then the St. Louis area was two very sweet sisters. To my utter astonishment, they were amazingly well behaved, incredibly polite, sweet, and simply perfect little subjects. As most child photographers will admit photographing kids at this age is all about patience, lowering your expectations, and just going with the flow. It’s always better to accept the chaos than to fight against it. I had to do nothing of the sort on this shoot. We even had a wardrobe change and little Kate & Audrey just ran with it like little pros.

Here are a few of my favs from the shoot. Laura, Kip, Audrey, and Kate thank you so much for such a fun shoot!

Oh and if you want to see all of the selects, check out their slideshow below.

Simon & Ruby!

My favorite family photo sessions are all about location and there’s nothing better than just taking a walk with a family through their neighborhood (especially when it happens to be my own). I was so delighted to spend an early September morning with Maxine, Joel, Simon, and Ruby.

I’m intrigued by sibling relationships, especially in slightly older kids. I’ve never seen a brother and sister get along so well. I’m sure their parents would argue with me but they were perfect subjects for the morning; all full of love for each other and incredibly comfortable in front of the camera.

Thanks Maxine, Joel, Simon, and Ruby for such a fun time! If you’re in the neighborhood stop by their awesome little wine shop, Ruby Wine or if you’re in the Mission, don’t miss Maxine’s flower and gifts shop, Stem.

Enjoy their slideshow!

baby dashiell session #2!

You may recall that I photographed baby Dashiell when he was much younger (and tinier!). This little guy has got to be the cutest baby in the neighborhood and he is growing so fast! I love his roly poly little legs and huge smile. Last time we took a few with Dashiell and his mom, this time we focused on dad. The light was really lovely and the bright blue walls in Dashiell’s room go well with his eyes!

Thanks yet again for such a great shoot, Kyle, Corey, & Dashiell! Here are a few of my favs from the shoot.

I’m kidding. Last week in Chicago I photographed my friend’s son Bode. He was awesome and we actually did two sessions; an early morning home/neighborhood session and a family session downtown. I’ll have some favs up in a little while but was laughing when I saw these images. Dustin, Bode’s dad picked me up for the early shoot and he had the idea of putting Bode in a shopping cart as we were driving past a Target. This is probably a nightmare for most moms but I have to say it’s pretty funny and cute.

Incidentally the light was really beautiful and Bode has the perfect little face for pouting. Thanks Dusty & Bode for these ridiculous photos.

way behind…

Traveling out of town for work and play puts me very far behind! I’m up to my neck in books and portrait sessions but thankfully I’m hunkered down for the next two weeks - then  I’m off to photograph a wedding in Memphis!

I can’t wait to share a few new sessions in Chicago and St. Louis as well as some older ones here in SF! Ahh!! I’ll make sure to get up at least one this week as I get them produced.

For now I’ll share some images from the excellent JCCSF Healthy Baby, Healthy Mama Fair. I met some incredibly adorable babies (check out the first baby’s hair!), as well as some great vendors and Doula’s who convinced me to try a home birth when the time comes (more about them later).

Have a great Tuesday and check back for some family sessions this week! Also, I’ll be announcing last days to book for 2008 as well as cut-off dates for holiday ordering.

xo,

Sarah

NYC session dates, 10/22 - 10/26!

09.20.08 | Permalink | Comment?

I just found out that I’ll be headed to New York Oct. 22-26 to hang with my friends at Blurb during the 2008 PhotoPlus Exp. If you plan to attend make sure to stop by their booth and see their books in person. I’ll be there to spread the word about their bookmaker program, BlurbNation.

When I’m not hanging with Blurb, I’ll have a few photo sessions available during those dates. My availability is limited but I will make room for a few kid sessions and a family session or two on Saturday. If you’re interested please contact me asap to get on the schedule.

I heart NYC!

kid poncho

09.18.08 | Permalink | Comment?

My sister called tonight and it was late. She’s on the east coast and I come from a family of worriers, so my heart always skips a beat until I can hear in her voice that everyone is fine. Thankfully, she was more than fine (thanks to a yuengling - my home town brew - and a margarita).

She’s on a beach vacation with my dad’s side of the family (Joe and I are bumming out we’re not there). She and my awesome (really) brother-in-law were staying up late and called as they were standing in front of a webcam. I know, who uses public webcams anymore but it was hilarious to see them instantly on the boardwalk, even if they were a blurry mess of pixels. I could still make out my (always) stylin’ sister’s outfit; a poncho!

So…incredibly long story short: I thought it would be cute to find a kid poncho and thanks to google, I found one at Fawn & Forest. Elsa may be getting one for X-mas to match her mom’s.

Check out the ponchos by clicking right here.

knowledge is yummy…

09.17.08 | Permalink | Comment?

Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of working with my friend and designer, Sam Leshnick. His kids Jasmine and Elijah go to the Chibi Chan preschool in San Francisco and I offered to photograph two classes of kids for their yearbook.

I just got the books from Sam and they look great! Sam did all of the design and he did a superb job. I love the “knowledge is yummy” tagline on the back of the caterpillar yearbook. The book was a fund raiser for the school and was a big hit all around.

If you have a school in your neighborhood and think they might be interested, I would love to work with you either with the photography, book production, or both!
